Stand committed to confront terrorism together: Pompeo

Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, today said the US grieves with the people of Sri Lanka and that they stand committed to confront terrorism together.

Speaking to media in Washington DC, Pompeo said that what was supposed to be a joyful Easter Sunday was marred by a horrific wave of Islamist radical terrorists.

“It is heart-breaking that a country which strived hard for peace in recent years has been targeted by these terrorists. We mourn the loved ones of the victims, some of them we can confirm indeed US citizens.

This is America's fight too. I spoke with the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and our embassy, other parts of the US governments offering all possible assistance to American and Sri Lankan governments alike,” he said.

He urged that evildoers should be brought to justice expeditiously and that America was prepared to support that. “We also stand with millions of Sri Lankans who support the freedom of their fellow citizens to worship as they please.

We take confidence in knowing that not even atrocities like this will deter them from respecting religious freedom,” he said.
