Sri Lankan appointed head of appeal court in Fiji

Sri Lanka's Dr. Justice Jayantha de Almeida Guneratne was sworn in as the Acting President of Fiji's Court of Appeal at the Fiji State House today.

The President of Fiji, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote commissioned the swearing-in ceremony at the State House.

Dr Guneratne before accepting the current appointment in Fiji was practising as a President’s Counsel in Sri Lanka, having appeared in several cases in the areas of mainly Public Law, Administrative and Constitutional Law, Land Law, Building Law and Civil Procedure (several of which are reported in the law reports of Sri Lanka.)

He was also a Visiting Lecturer and Examiner in Law (the University of Colombo and the Sri Lanka Law College) and Resource Person and Consultant to several Local and International Organisations including the Right to Information Commission of Sri Lanka.

Dr Guneratne has been a Salzburg fellow on a Fulbright-Hays Award and was invited to various Regional fora on the law, socio-economic and civil-political rights.
