Sri Lanka plunged into darkness - an act of sabotage?

General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB),  M.R. Ranatunga told Daily Mirror a short while ago that he suspects the islandwide power failure maybe an act of sabotage by the Trade Unions.

Ranatunga said efforts were underway to restore power in all parts of the country but since the Trade Unions were protesting against him, he suspected the power failure maybe a result of sabotage.

He however said that investigations would be held into the cause of the islandwide blackout but the priority was to restore power as soon as possible.

Ranatunga further dismissed rumors that a request had been made to the army to take over the restoration of power and said CEB Engineers were attemtping to restore power supply in all districts within the day.

He said however there was an attempt by the CEB engineers union to delay the restoration. (JAMILA HUSAIN)
