Special traffic plan within Colombo until May 2

A special traffic plan is in effect within the Colombo City limits from today until May 02, to ease the traffic congestion due to the Vesak Zones, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.

According to the Police, vehicular movement in Slave Island, Sir James Peiris Mawatha, Sri Utharananda Mawatha, Braybrooke Street, Dawson Street and Wijeyarama Mawatha would be restricted after 7 p.m. during the period.

SP Gunasekara also noted that the mentioned roads would also be completely closed or temporary converted to one way considering the traffic flow.

He said that Police officers would direct motorists for alternative routes during the period.

Meanwhile, special car parks have been set up in Slave Island, Vauxhall Street, Union Place, Staple Street and Muttiah Road.

Similar locations have also been set up in the Cinnamon Gardens area, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Malalasekara Mawatha, Longdon Place and the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Road.

“Also motorists entering the city can park their vehicles in Fort area at Marine Drive from the Kollupitiya. Parking slots at the Galle Face Green, Chatham Street, Sir Razik Fareed Mawatha, Bristol Street or Lotus Road,” he said.

He said that the Maliban Street, Kumara Street and Keyzer Street in the Pettah and D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha, Maligakanda Road in Maradana also open to motorists to park.

Accordingly, in Borella, Siridhamma Mawatha, Ananda Rajakaruna Mawatha, CMC Car Park, Cotta Road, Tickel Road and a lane of Baseline Road would be allocated for parking.

In Grandpass, Cyril C Perera Mawatha, Arthur de Silva Mawatha, Vincent Perera Mawatha are being allowed for vehicle parking.

SP Gunasekara noted that around 3,000 Police officers had been deployed to Colombo for traffic navigation and to maintain law and order during the period. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)
