Some factions in the government are engaged in a shameless attempt to gain the credit of securing the full ownership of the East Container Terminal (ECT) of the Colombo port, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna said yesterday.

JVP Politburo member Sunil Hadunnetti told a news conference that the Trade Unions and progressive people had to fight at the cost of their lives to protect the ECT.

“THE TUS and people were able to force the government to withdraw its decision to hand over 49% of ECT shares to an Indian Company after a great struggle.ten parties affiliated to the government told a news conference recently that it was a victory of the government and the President to protect the ECT and they were thankful to the government and the President for that.they are talking as if the Trade Unions were trying to sell it and the government came forward to rescue it. It is so shameful that they are trying to gain the credit of securing ECT,” he said.

Mr. Hadunnetti said those so called patriotic politicians were dumbfounded when the Cabinet Paper was presented to hand it over to the Adani group and added that they were now trying to gain the credit when the move was defeated.

He said their shameless attempt was downgrading the struggle of the Trade Unions adding that such acts should be condemned. (AJITH SIRIWARDANA)
