Six China-led firms on track for 3 light rail projects

Six China-led companies have qualified for the execution of three light rail projects in Colombo, it is learnt.

The Megapolis and Western Development Ministry held talks with the international bidders for the execution of these projects. Among them, six Chinese consortiums, having partnership arrangements with companies from different countries for technology, have qualified.

One light rail project will link Colombo with Moratuwa via Kirulopone, Pepiliyana, Katubedda and Moratuwa. The second will run from Ragama to Kottawa via Kelaniya and Battaramulla. The third one is meant for linking Colombo Fort with Kadawata.

In addition, the main line between Malabe and Colombo Fort will be implemented by a Japanese company under a loan facility from Japan.

The first tranche of US $ 260 million of this loan will be ready for Sri Lanka next month. It is US $ 1.5 billion loan from Japan.(Kelum Bandara)
