Senadhipathi to be tried in absentia

The trial against Avant Garde Maritime Services (Pvt) Ltd Chairman Nissanka Senadhipthi has been fixed for October 22 and will be heard in the absence of the accused.

High Court Judge Sashi Mahendran made this order in the bribery case filed by the Commission to investigate allegations of bribery or corruption on charges of offering a bribe of Rs.35.5 million to Major General Palitha Fernando (Rtd) by Avant-Garde Chairman Nissanka Senadhipathi consequent to the Avant-Garde floating armoury operations between 2012 and 2014.

Maj. Gen. Paltha Fernando who is in remand in connection with another case was produced in court today.

On the previous call date Gamini Marapona PC appearing for Mr. Sendhipathi submitted a medical report issued by a Singaporean doctor which was countersigned by a solicitor in Singapore and authenticated by the Sri Lankan mission in Singapore confirming that he was undergoing treatment in Singapore.

The Court had also issued an arrest warrant on Mr. Senadhipathi after he failed to appear in court in the case. (T. Farook Thajudeen)
