Security to Parliament beefed up: Speaker

The security in Parliament had been further beefed up as intelligence reports had revealed that it was under terrorist threat, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya announced today.

The Speaker said defence authorities had informed him that it was essential to beef up security in Parliament further.

“I have informed Serjeant-at-arms Narendra Fernando to up the security level in the House. All MPs will be informed of all the steps taken to ensure security,” the Speaker said.

He appealed to MPs to cooperate to ensure security in Parliament.

Meanwhile, vehicles of visitors and the media were not allowed inside Parliament premises today.
