Secure schools underpin platform for political drama: Akila

With the improvement in student turnout since last Thursday, several politicians are seemingly staging dramas to gain brownie points by visiting schools, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said yesterday.

Speaking to the media, he said the security forces assured 98 per cent safety in schools.

"Schools might have been reopened much earlier if people were not frightened over possible blasts last Monday. Against this backdrop, several politicians have visited schools without any fear. We cannot stop ministers from staging demonstrations. We have given them enough freedom under the Yahapalana Government. However, it was revealed that some groups attached to the opposition have been involved in instigating violence in the country," he said.

He said the government had decided to reopen schools for the second-term on April 6 after the reasons behind the dastardly and violent attacks were revealed.

"The people in this country should take wise decisions on these types of politicians. Meanwhile, the government had decided to take all Madrasas under the purview of the Education Ministry through a proper mechanism," he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
