New Democratic Front (NDF) presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa yesterday said he is willing to give up politics if the party members want him to do so but willing to lead the general election campaign under a broad alliance if that is also what people want him to do.

Speaking at a gathering of UNPers in the Dompe electorate, Mr. Premadasa said what is important for him is the people’s wish.

“Positions are temporary and one cannot hold on to them like an octopus. One has to be ready to give up positions. These values apply to me as well,” Mr. Premadasa said.

At the same time, he said if he is to be given the leadership it has to be done without any delay. “Presidential candidacy was given to me after going around asking form many. I was told that they had to ask from several persons and groups. Such an exercise cannot be followed again. Therefore if the leadership is to be given to me it could be done soon,” he added.

Also, he said he does not intend to divide the UNP at any time.

“The UNP tradition of going along with nationalism had changed lately and it should be back on track at the same time,” he also said. (Yohan Perera)
