The Special Task Force (STF) opened fire at a cab for disobeying order to stop in Point Pedro in Jaffna leaving two persons injured this morning, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

The incident took place near an STF check point at Point Pedro in Jaffna to guard natural sand mine and to prevent illegal sand mining in the area.

“The STF personnel ordered a cab which was approaching the checkpoint to stop. However, the cab eluded the order and reported to have attempted to run over them,” he said.

“Therefore, the STF personnel were compelled to use force in terms of the provisions of the Penal Code. Accordingly, they had opened fire on the vehicle.

However, the cab sped away without stopping, despite being fired at.

Later, it was learnt that two individuals were admitted to the Point Pedro hospital with gunshot injuries,” he added.

The injured were 23 and 26 years old males. The Point Pedro police are conducting further investigations into the incident and search is underway to apprehend the cab. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
