The SLFP’s Central Committee (CC) met this morning at the Party Office chaired by party chief, former President Maithripala Sirisena to take a final decision on the party’s stand on the controversial 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

General Secretary of the SLFP- Batik, Hand-loom, Fabric and Local Apparel Products State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara told the media that the SLFP had certain reservations on the 20th A and would take the most appropriate decisions after further deliberations of the Draft Bill.

National Organizer of the party, Solar Power, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Projects Development State Minister Duminda Dissanayaka said the country was in need of a fully-fledged new Constitution.

“The Current Constitution has been amended 19 times by now which shows the shortcomings of the 1978 Constitution. We all pledged to introduce a new Constitution at the August 5th General Election and therefore most appropriate things to do is to bring a new Constitution,” Minister Dissanayaka said.

He said the Maha Sangha, intellectuals, professionals, the civil society and a cross-section of voters who supported the SLPP at the Presidential and Parliamentary polls had requested not to pass the 20th A in Parliament in a haste.

“We must listen to the people and introduce legislations at a most appropriate time not confronting the mandate we had given. However, my genuine wish is that we would be able to resolve this issue through a peaceful dialogue and without putting the government in a difficult situation,” Minister Dissanayaka stressed.
