The number of persons, who died during the tense situation at the Mahara Prison has risen to 11.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that 107 inmates and two prison officers were among them and that the inmates who were finally admitted to the hospital were reported to have only minor injuries.
“ As of today, 109 have been hospitalized along with two prison officers. In addition 8 deaths have been reported," he said.
The unrest broke out at Mahara Prison on Sunday (29) afternoon when a group of inmates infected with the corona virus and another group tried to escape from the prison.
Accordingly, the unrest had escalated into a riot and it is reported that the remand prisoners who are currently serving life sentences have started assaulting the prisoners who are being held in the prison. Prison officials then used minimal force to control the situation, including several shots fired, he said.
