While urging the government to reveal the foreign conspiracy against Sri Lanka as stated by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his special statement, the National Peoples’ Power (NPP) said yesterday it could be ‘electric chair’ Part-II to garner sympathy votes.
JVP national organiser and NPP candidate Bimal Ratnayake told a news conference that the President as the responsible authority should reveal the name of the country or the organisation which was behind the said conspiracy.
“We doubt this is the ‘electric chair Part-II staged ahead of the general election. ‘Electric chair was widely used by the Rajapaksas during previous elections. Conspiracies are used as panacea by Rajapaksas,” he said.
Referring to the report of the MCC review committee, he said the report has not specifically stated about the two reports said to have been signed by the previous government related to the MCC agreement and US Dollars 10 million obtained from the US by the then government.
Mr. Ratnayake said the two agreements were only to express solidarity to work with US and added that they were not compelling to sign the proposed MCC agreement.
“Those two agreements are not relevant to the MCC pact. The government is not bound to sign the MCC just because of those two agreements. The review committee report is not specific on these two agreements,” he said.
He said if the previous government has obtained US Dollars 10 million, it should be there in the Treasury accounts.
He said the government was killing time to sign the MCC agreement and added that the MCC review committee was given four months to release its report with a plan to release the report after the election, but delaying of the election ruined the plan.
“After the report was released, the President is now claiming to open the report for public opinion. It is just to kill time till August 5. The MCC is set to sign soon after the election,” he said. (Ajith Siriwardana)
