The Department of Meteorology today issued a Red Alert on adverse weather conditions due to the depression in the Bay of Bengal that is turning into Cyclone ‘Burevi’, which could result in high wind and heavy windfall in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern and North Western parts of the country.
The system is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 24-hours which will likely cross the country, it said.
The system is likely to move West-Northwest wards and across the eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Batticaloa and Point-Pedro around today (December 2) evening and night.
While issuing a weather forecast yesterday for next 24-hours, the Metrology Department said very strong gusty wind at a speed of between 80 and 100 kmph in Northern, North-Central, Eastern and North Western provinces on Tomorrow (2) and day after (3).
Meanwhile, the department warned about intermittent showers at many places in Northern, North-Central, Eastern and North Western provinces over 200mm tomorrow and day after.
The general public was requested to be vigilant regarding impending extreme weather situation.
