Three MPs namely Wasantha Yapa Bandara, Tilak Rajapaksa and Chaminda Wijesiri today alleged that they had received death threats whilst the latter questioned the legitimacy of the recent election of a new President in Parliament.

“It seems that votes have been gathered for certain candidates who ran for the presidency by inflicting death threats on MPs. Therefore, one has to question the legitimacy of the recent polls held in Parliament to elect a new President,” MP Wijesiri said.

“Speaker should carry out an investigation on this matter and inform the House whether the election held in Parliament to elect a new President is legitimate or not,” he said. MP Yapa Bandara said an unidentified caller wanted him to resign from Parliament or face death.

“A mysterious caller contacted me and wanted to me to resign from the House or to face death. I have handed over recordings of the conversation to you, I request you to carry out an investigation on this matter,” he told the Speaker. MP Rajapsksa also called for an investigation on threats inflicted on MPs.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
