Rock cuttings done for various purposes such as construction of roads and buildings have caused frequent landslides in Sri Lanka, a geologist said yesterday.

Well known Geologist Professor Kapila Dahanayake told Daily Mirror that rock cuttings done for construction of buildings or roads especially on slopes in the hills have resulted in frequent landslides in Sri Lanka in the recent past.

“Retaining walls should be constructed or grass should be grown after cutting soil to prevent landslides,” he said.

He noted that it is mostly minor landslides that occur in Sri Lanka rather than large scale ones.(YOHAN PERERA)
