Several medical professional bodies have raised concerns opposing the decision to re-open liquor shops claiming that with this decision, COVID-19 norms are going for a toss.
No sooner the government announced that the countrywide liquor shops are re-opened, people started gathering in large numbers to buy liquor, ignoring health guidelines and rules.
Commenting on the decision, Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) President Dr Padma Gunaratne said the particular decision could adversely affect the positive way the country is heading right now.
“This could also lead to further delay in reopening schools as well,” she pointed out.
Moreover, Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) President Dr Lakkumar Fernando urged the Government to introduce a safer mechanism to enable consumers to purchase what they wish, without endangering lives of the entire nation.
Meanwhile, Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA), Executive Member Dr. Prasad Colombage said it was not appropriate to reopen liquor shops at this crucial juncture where the country is experiencing a downward trend in COVID cases and deaths. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
