Ranjan’s Contempt of Court case, SC concludes trial

The Supreme Court today concluded the trial against Gampaha District MP Ranjan Ramanayake for committing Contempt of Court and the delivering of the sentence was postponed.

The trial was taken before the three-member Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Sisira De Abrew, Vijith Malalgoda and Preethi Padman Surasena.

Additional Solicitor General Sarath Jayamanna who appeared on behalf of the Attorney General said that as per Article 105 (3) of the Constitution, the Supreme Court reserves the absolute power to hear any cases committed for contempt of Court inside the Supreme Court or outside it. Supreme Court Judges are also included under the Constitution. Therefore, the Contempt of Court is also directed towards Supreme Court Judges.

This trial will be taken considering as a criminal case. (Ranjan Katugampola and Thilini de Silva)
