Rajitha seeks anticipatory bail

Former Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne filed an anticipatory bail application in Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court today seeking an order to release him on bail if he was arrested over the alleged white van case.

The Magistrate will consider the anticipatory bail application tomorrow.

Earlier, filling a B report, the CID informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that two persons who were arrested by the CID for making controversial statements regarding ‘white van abductions’ during a press conference have confessed to the CID that they had done so due to a request by former Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne.

The CID also informed the court that the suspects had also confessed that they had made those false statements during a press conference regarding gold and foreign currency of LTTE leader Veluppillai Prabhakaran were also following a request by Rajitha Senaratne.

The CID mentioned in the B report that the suspects had said in their statements that they had demanded Rs.3 million to fulfill the deal and later it was brought down to Rs.2 million after the Minister agreed to provide them with other perks such as two houses and jobs at American or British embassies.

The suspects had also said that they related in the press conference what former Minister Senaratne had written them to reveal and that the facts revealed by them in the press conference were not true.

The suspects had confessed that they had attended the press conference after promised monetary rewards by former Minister Rajitha Senaratne. (Yoshitha Perera)
