Rains likely to reduce, still 20,000 affected

Showery condition over the island is likely to temporarily reduce to some extent from tomorrow while 20,624 people from 5,960 families are still affected due to adverse weather conditions.

The Disaster Management Centre said the affected people belonged to 14 districts - Hambantota, Batticaloa, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Moneragala, Kalutara, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Matale and Trincomalee and Mullaitivu.

Moreover, the Department of Meteorology said several spells of showers would occur in the Northern, North-Central, Uva and Eastern provinces and in Hambantota district.

“Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places elsewhere after 1.00 p.m. Light showers may occur in the Central province during the morning too,” it said.

It further said misty conditions could be expected at some places in Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces during the morning.

Highest rainfall of 89.5 mm was reported in the Wanduramba area in Galle district.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed the officials to inspect the damages caused to houses in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts due to the floods and take immediate remedial action. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
