One cannot accept the punishment given to former MP Ranjan Ramanayake for contempt of the Court as there are no legal provisions in the country that stipulate punishment for such an offence, SJB MP Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said today.

Fonseka told a press conference that Sri Lanka’s law has not prescribed any punishment for contempt of court. “One cannot agree with the punishment which was given to Ranjan in such a situation,” he said.

“Global situations regarding contempt of court are different. A lawyer in India who was found guilty of contempt of Court was fined one Indian Rupee. However, he refused to pay the fine and he was warned and released,” the MP said. (Yohan Perera)
