Prove veracity of allegations if possible

Non-Cabinet Minister Ajith P. Perera, who responded to the show cause letter sent by the party, challenged UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam to prove the veracity of allegations levelled against him.

In his letter addressed to Mr. Kariyawasam, Mr. Perera said he had not committed any offence in terms of articles 3.3(a), 3.3(c), 3.4 (a), 3.4(b), 3.4(d) and 3.4(e) of the UNP Constitution. He had told the UNP General Secretary to prove with evidence if he had committed any.

The Non-Cabinet Minister said there was no need for him to come to the party headquarters in Sirikotha on August 27 as he did not receive any letter sent by the general secretary.

“It is obvious that there was no meeting on UNP’s disciplinary committee on August 27. Therefore, the notion that the disciplinary committee decided to send me a show cause letter was far from being correct. I vehemently refute the allegations levelled by you as I have worked in accordance with the party line and according to the policies adopted by the party leadership as well as the working committee,” he said.

He alleged that the affair with regard to the show cause letter had been created without understanding the role he was currently playing or by following the influence of someone who was personally against him. “I have always worked in accordance with the constitution of the party,” he said.

He had further mentioned that the recommendations made by the Ruwan Wijewardene committee to ensure internal democracy of the party should be implemented without delay. He said it was his right to remind this matter as an MP and working committee member. He added that the party’s general secretary should praise him for standing up for the internal democracy of the UNP.

“The party’s general secretary had failed to take action against those who have crossed over to other parties after criticising the leadership and working against the interests of the party. The general secretary has no power to take action against me, both practically and legally,” he said. (Yohan Perera)
