Probe underway over verbal clash between police and army personnel near Parliament

A probe has been initiated over the incident where a verbal clash has taken place between two police officers and several army personnel attached to Army motorcycle squad at the roadblock near the Parliament complex during a public protest today.

According to the video, the Army motorcycle squad were seen attempting to ride despite the police barricades which were set up to prevent protesters entering towards parliament. 

Police said the inquiry has been initiated upon a request made by the Army Commander in regard to the incident.    

The Army said when four motorcycles of Army motorcycle squad approached the roadblock around the Parliament complex, two police officers (Assistant Superintendents of Police) acted inappropriately. 

Army spokesman Brigadier Nilantha Premaratne said the IGP has informed the Army Commander that he will take immediate action.

The Secretary to the Ministry of Defense has also requested the IGP and the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security to take immediate action in this regard, the spokesman said.

Accordingly, the IGP has directed relevant institutions to launch an independent inquiry over the said incident and take necessary disciplinary actions.(DSB)
