Investigations are underway following the incident where policemen are alleged to have used electricity on a group of school children in Hungamuwa after a wallet belonging to a teacher went missing, Minister of Education Susil Premajaynatha told Parliament today.

Minister Premajaynatha said investigations are being carried out by the Child Protection authority and the Ministry of Education.

“A circular has been issued on how to deal with school children when they commit an offence. We don’t know whether the authorities of this school have violated the circular. We can come to a conclusion only when the investigation reports are submitted I will inform Parliament about the results of the investigations when they are submitted,” the Minister said.

Earlier SJB MPs Kavinda Jayawardene and Jagath Kumara told the House that a group of school children have been subject to harassment by the police.

“The children have been electrocuted by the policemen and few of them have been admitted to police or to hospital?,” MP Jaganth Kumara said.

“These children have publicly stated that they were subject to harassment by the policemen,” Dr. Jayawardene said.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
