It was President Maithripala Sirisena who wanted the provincial council elections postponed, UNP MP Hesha Withange told Parliament yesterday.

“So don't point fingers at the UNP,” he said.

UNP MP Chaminda Wijesiri said the polls are postponed because of an issue in choosing an opposition candidate for the presidential elections. “The polls is put off till the opposition emerges stronger after a choosing its candidate for the presidential poll," he said.

Chief Opposition Whip Mahinda Amaraweera said the President wanted the PC elections postponed by a year or two ago but he now believes that polls should be held soon. “There is no connection between the presidential polls and the provincial polls,” he said. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
