President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, in response to the request by the opposition parties, has declined to re-summon Parliament.

Secretary to the President Dr P. B. Jayasundara has informed the Samagi Jana Balawegaya leader Sajith Premadasa in writing regarding the decision made by the President.

Earlier, the political parties including the UNP, the JVP and the TNA requested the President to re-summon the dissolved Parliament in view of the present emergency situation in the country.

In his letter addressed to Mr Premadasa, Dr Jayasundara has said that the opposition indulged in narrow politics when the entire government machinery had been directed to fight COVID-19. He said the opposition had not even recognized the dedicated commitment of health workers, the three forces, the police and the private sector in the fight against the spread of the disease.
