Powercuts highly likely from Tuesday: CEB

23 January 2022 06:50 am

There will be no power cuts today, but power will be interrupted from Tuesday due to inadequate fuel supply, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Acting General Superintendent Dr. Susantha Perera said.

He told the media that if there is a power outage on Tuesday, the public will be informed ahead.

"The Kelanitissa power station has diesel only for five and a half days. Sapugaskanda fuel stocks ended at 12 noon yesterday.

Sapugaskanda thermal power station is currently  unproductive. There were no power outages yesterday or today. The capacity will diminish on Monday. This issue would be solved if we get fuel on Monday (24). If there is no fuel on Tuesday (25), "then we have to face the tune," Mr. Perera said.

When there is a shortage during the peak demand even at nights, power cuts would then become inevitable.

No power cuts will be imposed without informing the people. Now the hydro power plants have reached their maximum level due to dwindling water levels. The CEB will seek advice from the Public Utilities Commission before imposing power cuts. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
