Police to extend info gathering operation in WP

Following the information-gathering operation carried out within the Colombo Municipal Council area recently to identify temporary residents and other establishments, the police have decided to extend its operation to other areas of the Western Province as well.

Western Province Senior DIG Deshabandu Thennakoon told Daily Mirror that police currently are in the process of registering temporary residents and those who failed to provide accurate information during the recent operation.

The Western Province Community Police Division had launched a three-day operation on 14th,15th and 16th of January to gather information on all temporary residents residing in houses, business premises, institutions, government or private premises, construction sites, etc. within the Colombo Municipal Council area.

The operation was initiated with the aim of securing national security and eliminating crime and narcotic trade in Colombo and more than 600 officers were deployed for the operation.

During the operations, the police found that a total of 2,746 suspicious temporary occupants have been residing in the Colombo City limits.

Also, the officers gathered information on 26,747 houses, business premises, institutions, government or private premises and construction sites within the CMC.

Senior DIG Thennakoon said Police are currently verifying the identities of temporary residents.

He said the operation will be extended to other areas soon.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuirya)
