The Police Headquarters has taken steps to create mobile application to store data on tuk-tuk drivers Island wide-mostly those who operate from three-wheeler parks.
Senior DIG Lalith Pathinayake has initiated the programme in order to identify the driver’s details for passengers and also to Police to immediately act in the event of a crime or theft of three-wheelers.
The Senior DIG said that the importance of this was that if a three-wheeler was found to be involved in a crime in any manner, the details of the three-wheeler could be obtained by the Police immediately.
He said that the Police were currently collecting the data of the all the three wheelers engaged in taxi services at present.
He said initially the Police commenced the programme from Kandy and expecting to launch the mobile App by the end of this month.
He said that currently around 200,000 three-wheeler drivers were engage in taxi service at three wheeler parks across the country.
“Steps have been taken to enter the name of the owner of the three wheeler, telephone number, chassie number and details of those currently engaged in taxi service in that application,” he said.
He said that passengers who boarded the three wheelers would also be able to check the driver details by scanning a QR code sticker pasted inside the three wheeler via the mobile app.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
