Aftermath the Passara road tragedy that took the lives of 14 passengers and wounded several others on Saturday morning, the police have initiated a month-long operation to nab the drivers who violate traffic regulations.
Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the operation began since Saturday (20) and stringent action would be taken against those who are driving under the influence of alcohol and recklessly, especially during upcoming festive season.
He said the policemen across the country have been provided with breathalyser devices which are used to measure the alcohol level in blood.
DIG Rohana said the traffic police division holds an additional 65,000 breathalyser units, which can be availed as and when required.
The police have been instructed to charge the passenger bus drivers who are recklessly and dangerously racing against each other.
The spokesman said the drivers should also be more vigilant when they drive on the railway crossing.
He said the statistics show at least ten deaths are reported everyday due to road accidents.
