Prisons Commissioner (Rehabilitation) Chandana Ekanayake said telephone facilities have been provided at all prisons including Welikada Prison, so that the inmates can call their loved ones at home in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the measure was taken after taking into consideration the mental wellbeing of the inmates since they are no longer allowed to have visitors due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Accordingly, Sri Lanka Telecom have provided 30 telephones with free call times up to three weeks to be fixed at prisons.

The CDMA phone will be placed at the welfare Division of prisons and each inmate will be allowed three-minutes of talk time, to call their homes under the supervision of a prison official. (Rekha Tharangani Fonseka)
