A passenger and an airport maintenance worker were arrested by the Customs Narcotic Control unit at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) with 26 kg of Gold Biscuits and Jewellery valued at over Rs. 317 million, Customs Department said.

Customs Deputy Director (Legal Affairs) and Media Spokesman Sudattha Silva said the raid was conducted as a result of the surveillance operations by the airport staff who were able to unfold a tactic adopted by the elements to smuggle gold into the country.

He said the gold biscuits were strapped around the suspect's body who had arrived from Doha, Qatar, the spokesman said.

He said the suspect had attempted to hand over the gold biscuits to an airport janitor inside the airport toilet and the janitor used to take the gold out from the airport without being detected by the customs officers.

Accordingly, the passenger and the janitor were arrested. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
