Parliament Secretary General Dhammika Dassanayake has informed the Election Commission about the vacancy left in the 8th Parliament from December 4, after the demise of Ratnapura District Parliamentarian Ranjith Soyza.
The Secretary General informed Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya of the vacancy in terms of section 64 (1) of the Parliament Act No 01 of 1981.
According to this Act, the Election Commission will obtain information about the next candidate from the UPFA preferential list from the Ratnapura District Returning Officer.
The Election Commission will then publish the same in a gazette notification.(Ajith Siriwardana)
