With 51 per cent of recipients of the second dose receiving the booster shot, the Health officials are of the opinion that the restrictions can be lifted forever if people showed further interest in getting the booster dose.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, COVID-19 Coordinator Dr. Anwar Hamdani said the Omicron situation is currently under control in Sri Lanka thanks to the successful booster rollout in the country.

“We have been able vaccinate more and more people with the booster dose, which is the only way for us to feel relaxed and comfortable. Now, the percentage has crossed 50% which is a remarkable achievement from where we were,” he underscored.

Against this backdrop, Dr. Hamdani stressed that if people continued with the same momentum of getting the booster dose in future as well, restrictions can be lifted forever.

“Sri Lanka seems to be driving to a comfortable stage; however, it has to be maintained by the people,” he added.

The number of daily cases which was over 1,000 for 27 consecutive days, has now fallen below 900 while the number of deaths ranges from 20 to 30. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
