Opposition vows to defeat national Govt. proposal

The Opposition said today it would defeat the national government proposal with the support of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP D.V. Chanaka said the government no longer has a majority in Parliament and this was why it was attempting to set up a national government and absorb more MPs.

"Minister Lakshman Kiriella has said the proposal to set up a national government will be presented to parliament on February 20. We will definitely defeat it. As the opposition, we are ready to do this. The JVP and TNA will also support us. They will have to support us if they want to contest future elections," he said.

The MP said the present government was the least people-friendly government of all time.

“Pests are destroying agriculture and no proper compensation paid to farmers. There are no employment opportunities for graduates and the drug menace is intensifying. Instead of resolving these problems the government is focused on expanding itself," he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
