The government has taken a decision to do away with the requirement of having passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination with mathematics to enter the public service as janitorial workers at state institutions, the Daily Mirror learns.
Currently, one should have passed the exam with six subjects inclusive of mathematics along with two credits to join the government service for janitorial services. However, the Cabinet of ministers on Tuesday evening had decided to scrap this compulsory requirement.
The government has taken such a decision to enable people with less educational qualifications from those who are lagging economically to join the government service as cleaning workers.
The Cabinet met with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in the chair. The President is reported to have presented the Cabinet paper.
The government did it as a move to provide employment to those with the least educational qualifications and those who hail from poor economic backgrounds. (Kelum Bandara)
