UNP should not allow those in the party who had made anti-Buddhist remarks and those who are charged with corruption to contest the next general election, an MP representing the party said yesterday.

UNP MP for the Galle District, Wijepala Hettiarachchi, told a press conference that the party leadership should see to it that those who made anti-Buddhist remarks and those who were charged with corruption are not given the ticket to contest the next general elections as it was them who contributed to the party’s defeat at the last presidential election.

“UNP should field a group of candidates who does not have any corruption charges if it is to win the general election,” he said.

The Tri Nikayika Taruna Bikkhu Sangamaya, an organisation of young Buddhist monks representing the three chapters have also made a similar request from the party leadership a few days ago. (Yohan Perera)
