There is no inspection carried out in Sri Lanka about the quality of cement while being imported into the country, the National Construction Association of Sri Lanka (NCASL) said.
They said the cement which are brought in mainly from India and Pakistan as they have become highly essential building material in Sri Lanka.
Therefore, the authorities use the easiest and the shortest route to import the required cement into the country, the Association said.
But the NCASL claimed that the imported cement does not go through stringent quality checks.
Therefore, the NCASL is challenging the responsible authorities to show them a report if there was a quality check done before cement shipments were unload.
There are labels printed on cement bags confirming that they were quality checked by the Sri Lanka Standard Institute (SLSI), but we have never heard of such quality checking on cement before being unloading.
He also said if substandard cement enter the country, the damage which could cause would be much greater than the recent domestic gas explosions. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
