Referring to the health emergency condition at the Galle prison, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Samitha Ginige urged people not to panic as the situation is now under control.

Speaking at a news briefing today, Dr. Ginige noted that all preventive measures have been taken to contain the spread of the bacteria within the prison.

“In addition, we have taken swift measures such as tracing the contacts of the inmates and administering suitable medication in order to make sure that the bacteria do not spread in the community,” he highlighted.

“There were 10 inmates being treated at the Teaching Hospital Karapitiya under the supervision of medical officers. Of them, four have been discharged. Also, we have directed their samples and no one has been confirmed to be infected with the disease as yet," he said.

According to the Chief Epidemiologist, Meningococcal disease is a rare disease caused by bacteria Neisseria meningitides. Sri Lanka has only reported a few isolated cases earlier. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
