No decision to increase electricity tariffs: PUCSL chairman

No decision has been taken for an electricity tariff hike, as news articles circulating regarding cabinet approval are insufficient to cover the loss of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said.

He told the Daily Mirror that the authority to take the decision to announce any tariff hike on electricity should be given by the PUCSL. The cabinet minister cannot make announcements at their leisure.

"There is law and order in the country, and we should act according to that," he said.

He claimed that several media reports had reported that the Cabinet has approved an increase in the electricity tariffs in two steps, in January and June 2023.

This is a complete misrepresentation of the country's people. Ratnayake emphasized that the PUCSL had made no such decision or made any announcements regarding an increase in electricity tariffs. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
