The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement will not be signed with the United States under our Government, Minister Wimal Weerawans said today.

He said this after he assumed duties as the Small, Medium Enterprise (SME) & Enterprise Development, Industries & Supply Management Minister.

Responding to a question raised by a journalist on the MCC, Minister Weerawansa said “We do not expect to sign the MCC agreement under our Government and we have won this issue.

The MCC was a highly debated agreement, which was to be signed prior to the presidential election. However, the process of signing the treaty was halted due to the mounting pressure exerted from various parties.

The agreement was reported to be signed on October 31 at 3.00.

Former President Maithripala Sirisena had assured several MPs who had gone to meet him to verify reports of signing the MCC agreement, that it would not be signed before November 16. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
