Claiming that nano nitrogen liquid fertilizer imported from India was a nutritional supplement, National People’s Power (NPP) MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today nano nitrogen would not be the solution to the fertilizer issue faced by the farmers at present.

He told Parliament that this so called nano nitrogen liquid fertilizer was really a nano urea and that according to the experiment report in India, it should be used as a nutritional supplement.

He said according to this experiment report, this nano fertilizer should be used after a month of cultivation and after applying 50% urea to the paddy cultivation.

“This nano fertilizer contains 4% of urea. The experiment report on this says that urea should be applied to paddy cultivation after two weeks of cultivation. And, this nano fertilizer should be applied after the paddy plant is grown to some extent so that the leaves could absorb this liquid fertilizer. It should be used as a supplement and after one month of cultivation,” he said.

The MP said when a new seed or cultivation method was introduced, it should be done after on-farm testing and said they doubt whether the Agriculture Research Institute had done such testing on this nano fertilizer.(Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
