Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Namal Rajapaksa, slammed reports that his father-in-law, Thilak Weerasinghe who serves as a Director of Airport and Aviation Services Sri Lanka Ltd. has been given the authorisation to import beef into the country following the cabinet approval to ban cattle slaughter.
Rumours circulated on social media yesterday that following the ban, Weerasinghe was now preparing to import beef into the country which was one of the main reasons that the ban had been proposed to the cabinet.
However rubbishing these claims, Rajapaksa said this was a personal attack against his family and no one in his family was involved in meat imports."In a day and age where fake news is rampant, it is sad to see people spreading false allegations against my family. These claims are rubbish and we have no involvement in any meat exports. This is the second time, Mr. Thilak Weerasinghe has been targetted by fake news, and this is nothing but political rivalry," Rajapaksa said. Weerasinghe himself dismissed the allegations saying this was a personal attack and said he himself was not a meat consumer. (JAMILA HUSAIN)
