Multi-faceted Kusum Peiris no more

Veteran broadcaster and lyricist Kusum Peiris passed away late last night at the age of 74.

She joined the Radio Ceylon Rangamadala programme as a schoolgirl at Kelaniya Gurukula Vidyalaya.

She joined the SLBC in 1972 and was ranked as an A-Grade drama-artiste and later an A-Grade announcer. She also wrote popular songs like Sihinayaki Oba Nihanda Mediyam Re, Hitha Gaawa Danga Kalaa, Gang Iwure, Bindunu Pemaka, Sithuwili Sirawee, Digu Neth Hasarelle, Asusu Sanin Eka Mohothakadi and several others. Besides announcing and penning songs, Kusum Peiris played key roles in several popular radio plays such as Muwan Pelessa, Monarathenna, Sugandhika and was also a dubbing artiste.

She married her SLBC colleague Neville Peiris, and they have three children - Wageesha, Thamali and Rajith. Funeral arrangements will be notified later.(Ramesh Uvais)
