While stating that it's premature to draw conclusions about the new COVID variant, the Sri Lanka Medical Association said the theories and opinions put forward by experts, are yet to be proven.

SLMA President Dr Padma Gunaratne told a news briefing today that in every pandemic situation, things tend to change from time to time.

"Experts are of the opinion that the new variant is more transmissible than previous versions of the virus, and that it may be able to bypass certain levels of immunity. However, these theories are not yet proven to be true," she underlined.

"It's true that the whole world is so worried of the new variant and so is Sri Lanka. We are not out of the woods yet," Dr Gunaratne pointed out.

Hence, she stressed that all people, regardless of vaccination status should comply with basic health practices.

Dr Gunaratne also requested the eligible persons to get the booster on time without delaying as it strengthens one's immunity. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
