Due to sudden trade union action by two Railway Trade Unions this morning, the Transport Ministry added more buses to facilitate office transport, Transport State Minister Dilum Amunugama said.

He said the train drivers' and controllers' associations suddenly engaged in a countrywide strike from this morning, claiming that they were not given COVID vaccinations.

As a result of that, the Ministry added more buses soon after the news reached that the railway services came to an abrupt halt and to ensure the commuters are not inconvenienced, the State Minister said.

State Minister Amunugama said the sudden train strike was unfortunate and it is not the right time to go for their demands where the general public is facing severe hardships.

Therefore, I advised the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) to operate more buses to provide transport facilities to the people from this morning," he added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
