GALLE (Daily Mirror) - Public Security Minister Tiran Alles revealed that the notorious criminal figure Nadun Chinthaka Wickremaratne alias "Harak Kata," currently in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), attempted to bribe him with Rs. 700 million to avoid being extradited to Sri Lanka.

This revelation came during a meeting in Unawatuna, Galle, attended by senior police officers, Officers-in-Charge (OICs) of police stations in the Southern Province, and several government officials.

Minister Alles also said that underworld figures are willing to offer even larger sums to senior officials in a bid to remove him from his Ministerial position.

The Minister emphasized that Officers-in-Charge (OICs) in their respective police stations will be held accountable for addressing drug and underworld activities in their areas.

The Minister expressed his intention to take action, including transferring non-compliant OICs.

"I will utilize the intelligence unit to gather comprehensive information on incidents in these areas, and transfers will be based on these reports," he said.

Minister Alles lamented the situation in which police officers are threatened while in uniform by underworld figures. He called upon the police to use their authority to apprehend criminals and assured them of his support.

He emphasized the urgency of eradicating both the underworld and drug-related activities.

Meanwhile, Senior Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Western Province, Deshabandu Tennakoon highlighted the role of certain police officers aiding and abetting underworld members, which has led to a significant increase in criminal activities.

He said this has drawn serious criticism and raised concerns about the integrity of the Police Department.

The meeting was attended by other high-ranking officials, including the Secretary to the Ministry, Senior DIG in charge of the Southern Province, Sanjeeva Medawatta, and STF Commandant Senior DIG Waruna Jayasundara.
