Man who spat at health officials gets 6-year RI

The Panadura Additional Magistrate Chandana Kalansuriya today sentenced the  person who spat saliva at health officials at Atalugama on  December 2, to six years rigorous imprisonment, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

He also said the Magistrate has ordered the suspect to pay Rs. 100,000 as compensation each of the four health officials.

A COVID-19 infected person from Atulugama, Bandaragama had spat saliva at a group of PHIs and health officials who attempted to take him for medical treatment in December last year.

The police had initiated an investigation into this incident and  filed charges against the person for obstructing duties of the government officials.

DIG Rohana said if the 56-year old suspect had failed to pay the compensation of Rs. 400,000, his jail term will be  extended by another two years.
