Makandure Madush is likely to receive a pardon in August 2020, a Sri Lankan intelligence officer assisting in the investigations in Dubai said on Monday.

State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake who contacted this intelligence officer over the phone said Madush and the others are likely to receive a pardon and be freed from custody under Dubai law. “Under this law even foreign prisoners may be pardoned in the month of Ramadan in the year following their arrest. As such Madush who was arrested this year may become entitled to a pardon in August 2020,” he said and added that they could halve their sentence if they convert to Islam.

Reports said six lawyers appearing for Madhush comprise lawyers from Sri Lanka and Dubai.

When asked who state minister was talking to he said the person was an intelligence officer.
